Antique Spanish Ceramic Apothecary (Pharmacy) Jar, 18th Century

Glazed ceramic apothecary jars were used for storing herbs and other substances for making medicines in the 18th century. Many feature beautiful designs or coats-of-arms with a lot of symbolism. This one has a beautiful crowned double headed eagle. The banner at the bottom has the words Santos Barrita. It also has a blank heart in the center. Sometimes a blank area was left on the jar in which the apothecary could write the jars contents. The jar is antiqued white in color with a rich blue design.
